How to Wake Up on a Monday Morning

1) it's important not to get out of bed too quickly after the alarm goes off.

2) once you do get out of bed, scratch as necessary.

3) on a cold winter morning, you may want to warm up in front of a heating vent.

4) think seriously about what you need to accomplish in the week ahead.

5) finally, wait impatiently for that woman to step away from the computer and go downstairs to feed you!

Creature of Habit

Maisie has many routines to which she adheres, most of them centered around my routines...especially in the morning.  Although this is not the first stage of her progression, this is the one I was able to capture today.  Whenever I get out of the shower and finish drying my hair, she changes her location from under the desk in the guest room/office (photo to hopefully be captured later) to the dog bed in the bedroom.

She may try to sleep, but will eye me suspiciously as I get dressed...
She really, really hates to be left home alone, especially because she has to stay in her crate due to her destructive tendencies.  She's always hopeful that she's coming with me wherever I go and often, she does...she even comes to work with me three days a week. But today I am taking a very good friend out to brunch for her birthday, and obviously Maisie is not welcome in the restaurant.

Whenever I leave her crated, I always give her either a frozen marrow bone or frozen Kong (freezing means it takes longer for her to get through them).  I usually stuff the Kong with Evanger's canned ground buffalo or venison, a treat or two and a little cream cheese and/or peanut butter.  Sometimes I change it up and stuff it with cooked sweet potato instead, and that's what she's getting today (along with a couple freeze dried fish treats and a bit of cream cheese).
Although I am recovering from a cold, we already spent 45 minutes at the dog park this morning in an attempt to poop her out before I leave.  Regardless, even after being presented with this frozen deliciousness, she will still undoubtedly act as if her time in the crate is a prison sentence, and unwarranted solitary confinement at that.

First Post

Welcome to a blog planned to be mostly about a girl (if one nearly 40 years old can still be considered a girl) and her dog.  Not just any dog, but a snuggly yet crazy suspected pit bull/Jack Russell terrier mix named Maisie.  Breed to (hopefully) be confirmed by the DNA test our dog walker thoughtfully gave us as a belated holiday gift.

I've had Maisie for two of her estimated three years now, and while she definitely has issues (to be covered in subsequent posts), thankfully she is exceptionally cute.  And she looks so peaceful when she sleeps sometimes, it has a calming effect on me.

She keeps me somewhat active whether I like it or not.  Even when it's freezing out and all I want to do is stay inside, I still have to get off my butt (and bundle us both up) to walk her in the snow.

She hates her little pink fleece, so I don't make her wear it during our weekend visits to the local dog park.  Maisie loves the park in all seasons, but particularly likes to roll in the gravel there when the weather is nicer.

I wish I knew what she went through in that first year before she was found as a stray. She has what I refer to as "PTSD" dreams sometimes (not usually very often but twice in the last week) where she shrieks and wails in her sleep.  They always scare the crap out of me, but make me so glad that she's now safe from whatever nightmares she experienced while awake in the past.

She is sometimes like my child and sometimes my best friend.  Many days, she is both.  I've already moved once because of Maisie...there's not much I wouldn't do for her.  A lot of people think I'm nuts because of it...maybe you do too!
